This is a copy of the news release on the school's facebook page - Bear Nation: Please welcome our new high school head football coach, Travis Payne to Willow Springs! Coach Payne played four years of college football at Benedictine College. Following his playing career, he was an assistant coach at El Dorado Springs, MO for seven years (five as offensive coordinator). Coach Payne has spent the last three years as the offensive coordinator at California, MO. We're excited to welcome Coach Payne and his family to Willow Springs! I dont know anything about him, but welcome aboard sir, and may good things come California has had 2 winning seasons the last 2 years after going 0-fer for awhile. I know he wasnt the head coach or what all he done, but he had to be an influence

On a serious note has anyone in WS met with the New coach and if so what are the Impressions? Does WS usually have a met and great to introduce him? Has he spoke to the team yet? Is there a feeling of excitement? I know that the return of Wyatt had everyone in WS town happy and gitty so I don't expect that but I think Payne could be a pretty good hire if he is given time and the Players buy in.
And how about a Next season Prediction for the M&W bears!!

I talked to a kid this morning who said he has been to town and met last week. He didnt go into many details but told me coach said his priority for this year is to build a good relationship with the players and work on the team more than x's and o's. So I'm taking it he's going by that old saying it's not the x's and o's but the jimmy's and joe's. That may be the right step to get kids interested and going again imo.
Here's what I like best about this hire though I've not met him yet. I wanted a fresh face from out of the area for a fresh start and didn't think we could pull that off. That can also be scary because you don't know what you are getting. I had another friend in another town tell me that the SCA itself could use some new faces and after some thoughts I agree. I believe this will give us the best chance to get going again. I aint saying that things will happen this way but the last time we hired a coach with 10 yrs experience but never had a head coaching job we won 3 SCA titles and that guy is now in Mtn. Home. So I'm in hopes history will repeat itself in due time, lol.
MGHS I agree I don't see a red carpet rolled out for him and unfortunately some folks may not invest in the program after feeling burnt from last year. As for me though I'm going to buy in what I can. It's not fair for the pasts to be taken out on the new guy and he needs all the welcome he can get. So far he's gotten that from the social media end of things so may that bode well for this summer/fall. California Pintos have had a lot of successes except for a couple years they didnt win a game. This guy came along and helped get them going again the last 3 years. Their jv record is pretty solid as well. I been told he helped start their wrestling program up there so this tells me he should be about conditioning. As far as predictions I'll wait and see how we are doing on numbers and such, but believe the SCA is won in week 3 (Grove v Ava/ SCA week 1) and after that who knows from top to bottom.

I am also being told Willow has hired Tanner Barnes, former Cabool QB. I don't know if he's doing football as he's supposed to be here for baseball and ms basketball? (I need confirmation on this).

Yeah lets get rid of those old faces. Webber, Swofford, Wyatt, no need for those guys cluttering up our conference.

While I can't blame them for that it may help shake up the conference when a new face comes in, hopefully for the better. If not then I stand corrected.

Hiring is dictated by the quality of outside applicants…we hired Johnson outside and he was good…Stucky was horrible and the assistants carried the program…Atkins was so-so and not vested long term. Liberty hired outside and the guy never made it and Liberty hired a former assistant and the program has kept rolling. As I said hiring outside is all good and well if you can find a quality candidate.
