While I am sure most who answer will go with the public/private debate. Just curious of what changes you'd make if you were in charge of mshsaa.
One I'd like to see is letting teams go back to full pads during the summer and not just a few days, more contact time.

Get rid of MSHSAA.tv and separate the private school from public schools during postseason play. You could divide them into 2-3 classes and then have 4-5 classes for the public schools.

Players get plenty of contact in the Summer. Refreshing their bodies and legs over the dead weak and early practices is a good thing. Let's not forget that Kids today do way more year around. I recall Bob Shores before his Retirement addressing this on the Radio. He told all his old players that they didn't do half as much as todays players. He said with the Off Season weights, Camps and 7 on 7 football was year around. In the old days Kids did nothing or minimal weight work, hauled hay a few days and then you had 2 a days so yeah the grind was tough.
I'd split the Public and Private simple as that. I could careless about what the privates do. Public schools shouldn't be supporting private schools organizationally.

Heck if they still hauled hay, there would not need to be the emphasis on summer weights...

I Do suspect you are joking .... Hauling hay doesn't develop speed/power... and those long hours can also be detrimental as well.

I Do suspect you are joking .... Hauling hay doesn't develop speed/power... and those long hours can also be detrimental as well. It develops long-held strength and not weight lifting strength along with being in shape. Used to the formula was to find as many farm boys as you could especially on the line. Those that hauled hay and did heavy work were more stout than any weight lifter. It was the same when Salem had all those miner's and loggers kids

The world has changed grandpa. MGHS is right. The hay hauling stuff is exaggerated as is most things from the past. Teams with kids who hauled hay excelled back then because teams did not have weight/speed programs.

Alpha and Fescue, one time had to unload a bale wagon full of wet alpha that was nightmare.... but if you want max speed you have to Sprint at max speed.. if you want to develop power you need resistance with speed movements in small reps. After a few bales Nobody has got speed movement and as I said there is a sweet spot go over that and you reach a negative outcome. If you threw 3-4 bales 7 ft. high you might get a benefit of overcoming resistance in the shortest period of time. Do 100 bales and your in the negative zone and it's counterproductive to having explosive speed on the football field. I'd say it would help the core strength though. Like to see a study on that.
Speed and Strength= power. Hauling a lot of hay might take some strength but it's not going to build it and the duration is going to kill the power and strength aspect. Good for Conditioning but nobody in Football in this day and age is into long term conditioning. Short burst of power and then rest for 25-35 seconds.

Hauling hay can be a great workout but being in the weight room 5 days a week during the summer is best! Hauling hay is a good thing to do after your morning weights
