MSHSAA released enrollment numbers...
No area teams right on the line, for a change... but some interesting or surprising things..
Willow and Forsyth have the same enrollment Clever actually is bigger than both Ava and Grove were well over the number... I think we all knew they would be Class 3, I just thought there would not be just a few over.

MSHSAA.org - click on schools -- click on enrollment data (you can also click and see where the breaks are for each sport)

Aurora 424 Buffalo 430 Cassville 478 Clever 312 East Newton 349 Eldon 447 Hollister 337 Lamar 294 Mt.Vernon 348 Monett 569 Mac Co 818 Nevada 587 Reeds Spring 436 Seneca 373 St.James 403 Rog 547 Marshfield 680 Irish 290
Just a few other relevant schools and their enrollment...Big enrollments usually mean more athletes and more talent. Example RS has 101 more students than Grove. So around 45 more boys to cherry pick athletic players from. And let's say out of that 45 only 5 or 6 are players but add in two or 3 extra good ones on offense and Defense and you can see that Hard Work, dedication and buying in to a program is so necessary to compete even within a teams class. 70 to a 100 more students is a advantage no doubt the smaller the schools.

In theory you are right, however, those numbers do not always mean #s. Our two schools are good examples. In most years I would guess that Grove actually has more kids playing football than RS, at least, historically. One of the things, at least in our case. We have a "home" for troubled teens that sends to our district but hardly ever has anyone that competes, we also have a much larger than average "special needs" enrollment, as people have heard about the reputation and moved to the district to get kids in the program.... But yes, there are exceptions but I totally agree with the theory you laid out.

We also have a Alternative school in our #s as well. So that is a wash. But I agree over the course of History Grove has had better numbers on the squad. Now I'd say they are in RS favor and the volume of Athletes out would favor RS as well in the last decade IMO. Of course back in my day in 4 grades we had around 480-500 kids. Usually around a 115-125 per class. So in todays formula About 375 enrollment. So while RS enrollment has increased we have shrunk over the years. I'd say the only thing going for Grove that is better than RS is football Culture but that is changing as well.. and actually making the finals is huge and can pay long term dividends for RS.
In Fact one of the Reasons that the SCA doesn't stack up to the Big 8 is just the sheer volume of the talent pool that the Big 8 schools have coupled with the culture. Even EN has a larger pool of kids to pull from.

We have an Alternative school as well in our numbers.. forgot about that. I was really hoping to see a jump in numbers this year, off of last year, too. It didnt happen at the HS level, but you might be right, we might see it down the line, we have more 7th graders out than we have had in a very long time. We will see how that pans out. Overall enrollment is almost exactly where it was 3 and 4 years ago. But that is not bad, for years we were shrinking. Overall k-12 we are 200 below where we were at one time. Not sure about East Newton.. I went to Hollister's Blue and White Night.. They had 28 players total Frosh - Sr. It could be rough for them, this year.
