Perhaps willow football can get on the softball joke of a deal. Get a 2nd season in the spring approved by MSHSAA and have only like a third of the schools in the state play during that season and keep all the bigger schools and private schools playing during the fall.

They finished 4th in the state. Was up 3-2 on #1 Diamond until the 5th inning then the Wildcats put up 10 runs in the 5th and a homer in the 6th and it was over. They fell to Lone Jack 5-2 in the 3rd/4th place game.
Bonehead I'll agree with you on the 2 season thing. Some schools get to play both fall and spring baseball and that confuses me. Tennis and golf are also head scratchers where the girls play in the fall, boys in the spring. Willow was going to stay in fall softball but most of the area moved to spring. There wasn't enough teams in the fall to allow Willow an SCA title they could have in the trophy case (forget which year but recent), so they joined up with the other SCA schools for spring ball.

Fall baseball does not have districts and a state championship.
Tennis and golf are in different seasons but all the girls play at one time and all the boys play at another. So it is a level playing field.
Softball is the only sport where they have a state championship in each season. It makes no sense. Diamond won the class 2 state championship yesterday but it is so watered down it means nothing. The classes are so small that you only need to win one game and you are in the final four. And who the real class 2 state champion….whoever wins in fall or in the spring?

Didn't know that about baseball, I thought they had titles in both seasons. Thanks for the info

Yeah Fall baseball is basically a extension of Summer Leagues for schools with no football....

Fall Softball is still ahead of the Spring but the gap is a lot narrower than it used to be. The Spring level of play has really improved with the numbers jumping higher and higher each year. I still think its a matter of time until everyone plays in the Spring. I really think MSHSAA thought it would happen by now... Its going to take some of the really big schools to make the move to start the trend that will eventually get it done

By why does the state give them the choice? Make the call and be done with it. Football does not have a choice to play in the spring if they want.

I think most of the schools who stuck with a fall softball season have girls soccer which is in the spring, so they preferred to conflict with volleyball over soccer. No spring softball school I could find has girls soccer.
There are 60+ schools in class 2 spring softball but Willow is top of the list in enrollment.

Another solution would be to say all of the smaller classes are in the spring and larger classes are in the fall. At least that way you would have a true class state champion. With this current system you have two class 1 state champions and two class 2 state champions. No other sport gets this situation.

That’s what caused Ava to move to Spring ball. I think Ava, Willow and Salem were the last to play Fall ball and 3 schools wasn’t enough for an official SCA championship.
