FOOTBALL: Third quarter disaster for Salem A nine-minute stretch in the third quarter spelled trouble for comeback-hopeful Salem Saturday afternoon in an SCA game at home against Ava. The Tigers threw interceptions on three straight possessions, then fumbled the ball away, then turned it over on downs in a 38-0 loss. Salem trailed 12-0 before the horrendous stretch of football, when the Bears scored 19 points. Two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns by Ava's Quincey McDonald, the second giving the Bears a 31-0 advantage with four minutes, 35 seconds left in the third quarter. The game, held during Salem High School Alumni Reunion Weekend, was postponed Friday night due to lightning and heavy rain.
Salem's offense never really threatened to score in the game, as Ava's defense completely dominated. The Tigers dropped to 3-2 after winning three straight games to open the season. Ava improved to 3-2.
Next up for Salem, 1-2 in the SCA, is a conference game Friday at Willow Springs.

Well I'm not sure here lately they don't look like a team they look like they've never played high school ball before...Sorry to put it that way but I've never seen so many mistakes by a QB before in Saturday's lost and a few other games...Eplin is a good QB but u have got to look at ur other wideouts if one is double covered then that leaves someone open and every Salem home game I've been to this year has been that way they have all doubled up JJ and left guys like Elwood, Hobson, Nall, Floyd, and Cook wide open its things like that that don't make since the coaches should be noticing that but guess there not...Salem could easily be 4-1 right now and I'm givin Ava the 1 lost to but we should've beat Thayer but again offense has got to hit the open guys...Hope things change before districts cuz we could very well be goin on the road instead of first round home game
