I have kept track this year on a spreadsheet of points scored and allowed by each team. Now before I release my #'s I want you all to keep in mind that I just did this by scores. I didnt have stats to see who scored on defense or special teams. And I also know strength of schedule can figure in for some. BUT, what these to prove is how who finished where in the conference. I also did not keep track of points in the conference, just the 9 weeks overall
#1 in scoring - Nope, it's not Liberty but by 1 point it's Mtn. Grove - 391 vs 82 allowed. This makes an average of 43.4 vs 9.1
#2 Liberty has 390 points vs 95 allowed with an avg of 43.3 vs 10.5
#3 Ava scored 342 vs 140 allowed with an average of 38 to 15.5
I will pause here for a minute - you are quickly going to see why these 3 finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the conf. Notice the big drop in points here
#4 Willow Springs - 197 (long ways from 3rd place 342) vs 259 for an average of 21.8 to 28.7. Of course this team and the next 2 mentioned proves that when things were gelling they were gelling and when the wheels flew off....well.....
#5 Salem - 174 vs 204 for an average of 19.3 to 22.7
#6 Thayer - 163 to 221 for an average of 18.1 to 24.5
Another quick pause here, these 3 had decent records despite giving up more than they allowed, which also proves that 1 bad game or 2 (or in willows case 3) can really bobble up things, lol. Still yet, FIVE teams in this conference finish the regular season at .500 or higher. Thayer was close, but I believe injuries to key starters made that difference. Now notice the next big change
#7 Cabool - 114 scored vs yikes, 321 allowed for an average of 12.6 to 35.7 - new coach/system combined with youth.....
#8 Houston - 105 scored vs 362 for an average of 11.7 to 40.2 . Houston started scoring some points but got off to bad start of the year.
When I used to do this before (in the 90s) I kept track in notebooks. I have seen years where the last place teams have scored less than 20 points all year and the winners were in the 400's in scoring (which 2 of these werent far off, and that is in a 9 game reg season compared to the 10s of years past). Overall I think the conference did pretty good, especially when 75% of our conf finished at .500 or better.
Feel free to comment
