Some of you may know by now, if not you get to know here if you havent picked up a Howell County newspaper. Gabe Fris resigned as Head Football Coach last Thursday (June 22). He is still teaching at the school. On Monday Logan Schwalm was moved up to head coach from offensive coordinator.

Wow,don't really know what to say.Thought things were on the upswing last year.Is this a better fit with the players? I dont know this guy enough to say yes or no, with me the jury is still out on that. I had a senior player tell me the coach had a meeting today with the players who showed up (22, yeah twenty freakin two which is up from the 19 last week. #23 is out of town at a phenomenal state program that only a select few get chosen for). The new coach along with some seniors went and approached a lineman who turned in his stuff last week and I think will be coming back. I do not know how many others were approached but they are going to spend the next few days trying to get some bodies to play. The positive to the low numbers is we return some key players in key positions. The negative is we have NO depth. If we get a key injury in the right place we are in for a long fall. The other negative is, if the numbers stay where they are can we complete a jv schedule because we will need some kids on Friday Night. I hope this recruiting mission bodes well. Now for a very very rare, unlike Dew rant. - This will be my 30th year supporting Bear Athletics. I have not seen this issue this bad since 1992-93. We have gone 14 years without a conference title or even a sniff of it, only 1 winning record (6-5) since Coach Ary left, and have gone 13 years since a district title or even a state ranking. Hell we cant even get a ranking in the Ozarks. This school and this community needs to put more emphasis on our extracurricular activites and step it up big time. Im tired of being told to be patient my patience has worn thin. If Willow Springs does not turn things around and I mean SOON I may just park my butt at the house from now on. I hate doing that for the kids I know, but I will not go through this crap anymore. If any school board member or administrator reads this then you also need to consider the fact that to get a good football program you need to open up the pocketbook more than you have, which includes salaries of coaches and more coaches than the 3 or 4 we have on staff for varsity to jr high. The community needs to step up its youth programs as well. We need to have real mighty mite football and not just what the Y does. The youth coaches do all they can but are only permitted so many practices and only 4 games. The kids dont get full development and by their sophomore year are giving up and gotta be begged to play. Yes, some kids also need a boot up their butt and attitudes changed but the community as a whole needs said change not just the kids. I know not many people read this forum anymore but for those from Willow who do - either step things up or I am stepping out. Put your foot down on board members, AD, admins or whoever!!

I have been waiting on Willow springs to bounce back too. I figured they would be like Grove , a couple of down years then bounce back up to the top. I hope the new coach the best.
